The Coupling

I'm still working on the proper layout of these web pages.  The story they tell are primarily for my personal documentation.  The pictures immediately below go through some measuring that proved to us that all was almost good.

A small ridge hols the bearing.  The bearing is about the size of the dark area on the left of the arrow.  The light colored end of the shaft is extra.
Bearing in place.  The bearing sticks out .32" from mating plane.  And then the tranny has additional 1.15" of shaft.
On engine side, .8" for bearing then .3" more to bottom.  Clearly that .3" will not accommodate the 1.15" shaft extension.

Shallow engine side shown without the clutch.  The small circle in the middle is the end of the motor drive.

Fly wheel in desired position.  This check was to compare the original flywheel alignment from the back engine plate.  All is good.
The "Connect It!" book describes the situation I found myself in and cautions, "You'll have to either cut the finger off (and ruin the main shaft of the transmission if you ever want to sell it or use it on a gas engine again), or you can fabricate your own extension for you coupler."

WELL, it never occurred to me that this operation might ever be reversible.  In fact, when I removed the engine and tranny so that the transmission could be sent to EV West, I began removing all components and wires associates with the internal combustion engine.  Maggie was absolutely on a one way adventure.
We spent a long time measuring and measuring, drawing and redrawing.  We determined that the engineering of the coupler and adapter were perfect if we cut an exact length off the transmission shaft.  The first picture above with the red arrow marking the inner stop for the bearing.  The dark area is the approximate size of the bearing.  The light end of the soft was extra.  We left a predetermined bit beyond the bearing and made our cut.  "Measure ten time and cut once" worked just fine.
